Work hard, get a well-paid job and buy a house…this all seemed like sensible advice when I was growing up. But, at the age of 28, I’ve accomplished these things and still there is something missing.
For years now I’ve felt the urge to give it all up and travel the world, with no fixed location…just wandering.
Many people think I’m strange, or at worst, ungrateful for what I have. I’m certainly not the latter. I just believe that we were born to do more than just pay bills and enjoy life when we can book annual leave.
With a rise in digital working and opportunities that generations before us never had, it’s time we give up the rat race and explore the beautiful planet we’ve found ourselves inhabiting.
Don’t get me wrong, it can be easier said than done. We have become institutionalised into living the ‘safe’ way. The way society says we should. It’s scary giving up security for the unknown, but it’s exciting too.
For me, the real turning point came when I read an amazing book ‘Be a free range human’ by Marianne Cantwell. There were many amazing tips and success stories in the book but what really hit home was the very simple sentence ‘your job is only as secure as your notice period.’ It puts a totally different perspective on job security.
We can be just as secure living outside the box as we can suffocating in it. It just takes imagination, passion and determination. I know which one I’d prefer.
So now is the time to make sure you are living a life you love, or at least working towards it. Explore the world, share your passion and get everything out of life that you desire.
We weren’t born to merely survive, we were born to thrive!
